this isn't a criticism but i think totk would have made an incredible horror game (or at least would have been really good if nintendo had leaned more into the horror elements already there)

like. you have link with gloom in his body for the entire game. there's that right there that could make for a terrifying situation for him with ganondorf's abilities. there's the fact that both ganondorf AND the yiga clan can now impersonate zelda (and other various NPCs). you don't know who you can trust anymore because they may be a familiar face, but are they really who they say they are, or are they just trying to get close to link so they can kill him? the gorons are angrier than they've ever been because of that marbled rock roast. rito village is in the middle of a destructive snowstorm that never seems to end (snowscapes work well for horror :)). zora's domain is being covered in muck that the zoras can't breathe in. gerudo town is pretty much destroyed and even in game it's horrifying to see the town overrun with gibdos. i think they're really close to it in sections (goron city, gerudo town, hyrule castle, the depths).

After spending hours niching it, as well as getting a full roster 620, I have so much to say about this CC. There's a lot that can be said about stat bloat or the invis drones or whatever, and yeah, those are bad. But I think the real problem is this: with the old CC, you could adjust the risks in such a way to suit your roster. It'd be hard no matter what you took, but you could look at who you had and find the limits of what they could do. It was so cool to see what other people put together because it was always so different from what you did. But with CCB, it's the other way around: you have to tailor your squad to the event. There are just so few options with the tags, and so many of the points are locked behind set bonuses or completely unrelated tags that you kind of have to take all the modifiers if you want 620 or above. The only choice is really whether you take more attack or more HP. And I think that's why so many clears seem to look alike, with Ines, Virtuosa, Ceobe, Dorothy, etc. Honestly, it wasn't until I stopped caring about 620 that I started to enjoy myself. Once I stopped needing to take all the risks and focused instead on putting together something fun/interesting and pushing the limits of what my niche could do, it totally opened up. And I think that's really telling! They could just add more options for the risks, or adjust the point threshold for the medal, and the event would be way more fun (and would still be a substantial challenge). And I know that's easier said than done; game balance is difficult and managing it in such a way that the challenge medal remains challenging isn't easy. But I really hope they move more towards that in the future.

My experience with outer wilds is kinda weird. It’s my favorite game, but I played it wrong.

I’m bad at video games. That’s not a self deprecation thing, it’s just a fact. I struggle with the controls (they just don’t come intuitively to me). I also get genuinely stressed out to the point where I often can’t keep playing.

Most of my experience with video games comes from watching others play them, which then inspires me to play them myself. Many might find this pointless, especially cause I mostly play story heavy games and if I’ve seen a playthrough I already know the story, but i still like to play it myself.

With outer wilds I actually started playing it without spoilers first like you’re supposed to. But I was never really told “do not look stuff up” explicitly, so I did. A lot. I’m a completionist, so I tried to explore planet by planet and if I got stuck on something I looked it up. I didn’t actually finish the game. I explored most of giants deep, brittle hollow, timber hearth, the attlerock and some of ember twin. I didn’t reach any of the harder locations and I don’t think I was really processing much of the info. Eventually I gave up. I got stuck on ember twin cause the time pressure stressed me out.

I still really liked it so I decided to watch a playthrough. And I fell in love. The story really got to me and I immediately started playing it again. I know the whole point of outer wilds is to experience it yourself. And knowing how to complete the game ruins it. But I still played through it, finding all the text and letting the story sink in. (I actually haven’t reached the ending, I tried once but immediately crashed and died and got so stressed I had to stop, I haven’t had the motivation to try again yet)

I regret it now. I wish I got the true outer wilds experience. I still love the game, I love the story, but I never truly got to explore and put all the clues together myself. And that’s my own fault. Luckily I didn’t watch echoes of the eye and I’m going to play it soon with minimal spoilers and hopefully reach the end. (This has been sitting in my drafts for a while so at the time I’m posting this I actually just started!)

I wonder if there are any others in the outer wilds fandom that didn’t play it “correctly”. Since people talk a lot about their experiences playing the game and how it changed them I always felt like I was missing out on something since my personal experience of playing the game is kinda “wrong”. But I think it shows you can still love something even if you didn’t experience it the way it was meant to be experienced. I love the story and the world so much and it means a lot to me.

Quick question. What would happen if someone came up on one of dipper's old graves and decided to resurrect him during one of his reincarnations? Would his soul leave the current vessel and get sucked back into the old one, or would his corpse just be filled with a whole lotta nothing?

That's an excellent question!

My first impulse is to say that resurrecting Dipper's old body wouldn't have an effect. Whoever did it would end up with a zombie, or the shell of a body with nothing in it.

My second impulse is: What if Dipper did get sucked out of his current body, and popped right back into his old one? Now you've got one very confused Dipper, and one extremely distressed demon who just saw the love of his life get his soul sucked out, going limp and dead right in front of his eye!

Overall, I guess it depends on exactly what kind of resurrection was pulled off. A body alone type thing will get you no brain or soul to go with it, but if it specifically targeted the soul itself? Then you better have enough oomph behind it to yank it out of someone who's currently alive.

I immediately see someone making fun of Daniil for having highly specific special interests that he likes talking about.

I ignore it and scroll further only to see another 5 posts calling him annoying for oh wait give me a second *rereads text posts making fun of Daniil* showing symptoms of autism.

I sigh like a depressed disappointed father. I close tumblr.
